88/365: Varied

One of the things I most enjoy about visiting Ireland is the wide variation in terrain, both natural and human-created.

Kells Priory, the spectacular ruins of a fortified, enclosed priory dating to the 1100s (remarkably serene and free of visitors):

71/365: A walk in the Malá Strana

A beautiful midday sky greeted me for a walk up one of the seven hills of Prague (and certainly the most visited one).

53/365: Unidentifiable

22 02 2009

I saw this mix of a rusted…something…with various organic matter in the grass. And I cannot conceive of what the object was originally (nor how it ended up where it did).

45/365: Escape

14 02 2009

This photo is the first P365 photo taken with my new toy, my first dSLR, a Canon xTi. I have a modest collection of film SLR bodies and lenses, and I have started to enjoy the greater control again (although in many ways the G9 is more photographer-friendly). (I had actually planned to purchase this body at the end of 2008 before I decided to do P365, and P365 actually delayed this purchase…by the way, Canon refurb xTi bodies are available for $299 at Adorama if you are looking…)

I also decided to center my efforts on really learning a single focal length, so I bought a 50 mm/f 1.8 lens (80 mm 35 mm equiv) as the sole lens for this camera. I have already liked the challenge and the forced increased precision in my visualization.

Needless to say, I am having fun exploring the possibilities (and limitations) of this camera.

44/365: Steel support

If you take a core sample from a steel support from a 100-year-old subway platform, how many layers of paint would you find?

Cape Canaveral? Nah, any car can take off in Brooklyn…

39/365: Rusty

From a nearby railroad bridge. I particularly like the way the rust enhances the third dimension of a two-dimensional surface (perhaps in a similar way to the effect of seeing a van Gogh in person creates a different feel than is ever obtainable in an image on paper or on a screen).

34/365: Faded stars

3 02 2009

From the steps of a popular diner. It’s due to be demolished in the next few weeks, so I wanted to get this picture while I still could (shot through a now-present fence).

30/365: Patterns on steps

30 01 2009

0130patternsonsteps4364

Weathering and growth combined to take a set of steps on an uninteresting 8-year-old-building and produce something that I wouldn’t have noticed if I weren’t doing project 365.
